Sony’s new WF-1000XM5 doesn’t quite dethrone the Bose Quiet Comfort II earbuds in terms of active noise cancellation, and the second-gen Apple Airpods Pro have a better transparency mode, but Sony’s new buds come very close on both of those scores and Sony’s audio reproduction is superior to both its rivals. And that’s our primary reason for recommending a headphone of any type. These earbuds have a marvelous set of other features, too.
Sony’s WF-1000XM5s feel like a natural evolution of the company’s flagship line. Crucially, they’re more comfortable than any previous version in your ears — even if the new glossy coating is testing my patience. The active noise cancellation and sound quality have each been amped up a discernible amount — even if the results aren’t game-changing. And I can confidently take calls while using them without any dread of sounding like a muffled jerk. These are the most well-rounded execution of Sony’s vision yet. But I’ll be keeping an eye on battery longevity.
The new design is a big positive: they’re comfortable, nice to use and noise-cancelling and call quality are up there with the competition. And if you’re looking for the clearest and most detailed sonic performance on the market right now, then the WF-1000XM5 produce it, and by quite some distance.
Is the Sony WF-1000XM5 the same kind of no-brainer recommendation as the outgoing WF-1000XM4? No, it isn’t: It’s more expensive, the level of competition it faces has improved, and it’s not the sort of consummate all-rounder the older product was.
I also like the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds 2 and the new Beats Studio Buds Plus, the latter of which cost significantly less. But the WF-1000X Mark 5s really are the complete package, particularly for Android users. Yeah, you could quibble about them not including a wider variety of ear tips and maybe missing a feature or two and costing so much. But they do largely live up to their hype.
It’s evident from the time I’ve spent with the WF-1000XM5 that Sony has developed a fantastic set of wireless earbuds. When it comes to sound quality and noise cancellation, I can safely say you won’t find better, even if you spend more. Their call quality is among the best, they’re absolutely loaded with the latest features, and the only area where Apple remains on top is transparency.

Creating a sequel to a bona fide legend like the WF-1000XM4 earbuds is a tall task that Sony accomplished with the WF-1000XM5. By bringing welcome, if not always perceptible, sound upgrades, next-level noise cancellation, and improved design without skimping on battery life or drastically raising the price, the audio giant created a stellar product all around. These are the true wireless earbuds to get if you are looking for the best sound, best noise cancellation, and best battery life money can buy.
The Sony WF-1000XM5 earphones are a worthy update to one of our most-recommended models, with the best audio quality of the noise-cancelling pairs we've tested. Sony even manages to sometimes outduel the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II and the Apple AirPods Pro in the ANC department, though Bose remains the most consistent. The AirPods offer the slickest experience for users of other Apple devices, though they fall just behind Bose and Sony in terms of noise cancellation. All three pairs are easy to recommend and earn our Editors' Choice award, with Sony's WF-1000XM5 earphones coming in first for anyone who prioritizes audio quality above all else.
Sony's flagship true wireless buds remain some of the most musical in-ears you can buy at this price, but the competitors have started to push them on noise cancelling and call quality. They're still a great buy, but its closest competitors are worthy of consideration too.
With the WF-1000XM5, Sony improves its already formidable mix of great sound, effective ANC and handy features. These earbuds are undoubtedly the company’s best and most comfortable design in its premium model so far, which was one of the few remaining riddles Sony needed to solve. For all of the company’s ability to add so many features, many of them still need fine-tuning, but that doesn’t make them any less useful in their current state. The WF-1000XM5 are more expensive too, which means the competition has one key area it can beat Sony.
The Sony WF-1000XM5 is one of the most expensive TWS and accordingly has to compete with the best of the best. In the overall package with the outstanding app, the feature set including headset function for making calls and the probably best ANC in its class, it absolutely justifies its high price.
Sony has thrown everything it can into these much smaller earbuds, and given us an extra set of foam tips so they fit perfectly. LDAC, the firm's top-tier DSEE upscaler, and Bluetooth 5.3 are all here, battery life is competitive, and the sound is 100% bona fide Sony quality. However, for us, connectivity drop-outs, average ANC performance, and an app that looks a little busy at this flagship level add up.
The WF-1000XM5 is another excellent headphone from Sony that represents a step forward for its true wireless series. An improved design leads to better comfort levels, the noise-cancellation is better, they come with a bevy of smart features and an audio performance that’s clearer and more detailed than before.
The Sony WF-1000XM5 wireless earbuds are one of the most well-rounded wireless earbud packages I've experienced, with best-in-class sound, improved noise cancelation, and a smaller, lighter design.
The latest addition to Sony's flagship wireless earbuds line brings fantastic sound, improved ANC, and a smaller design that's easier and more comfortable to wear. These are now the wireless earbuds to beat.
Soberly, the Sony WF-1000XM5 test can be summarized in just one sentence: The new Sony earbuds are the best in-ear headphones with ANC that money can currently buy. The sound is excellent, the active noise cancellation unrivaled and almost on par with over-ear headphones. The battery lasts for a long time, the build quality is absolutely flawless, and the XM5s don’t lack anything in terms of features either.
The follow-up to Sony's WF-1000XM4 earbuds look and feel like a whole new thing in the best possible way. The drivers are bigger, the ear tips have been replaced, the processors have been upgraded and the exterior has gotten a facelift.
Improves on what were already some of the best noise-cancelling in-ears around, with even better ANC, a more comfortable fit and stellar audio. They’re pricey, but the WF-1000XM5 are absolutely worth it.
This is a difficult question. If given the choice between buying the Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) or the Sony WF-1000XM5, I think I would go for the AirPods. It’s a saving of $100, a better fit, and a better transparency mode. The Sony XM5 is extremely good, and sounds amazing, but the fit and comfort issues really give me pause.
All things considered, the Sony WF-1000XM5 just about manage to cling onto their mantle of the best all-rounders in the true wireless space. However, it seems unlikely they’ll hold that title by the time the WF1000-XM6 arrive and, depending on your priorities, there may also be a better option out there for you in the meantime.
The Sony WF-1000XM5 are the best sounding wireless earbuds ever made, beating Bose and Apple in the same price range. Minor quibbles with controls and connection can’t stop me from recommending them.
Sony wants to own the premium BT/ANC WF-1000X earphone and WH-1000X headphone market. The Sony WF-1000XM5 is a step up from the M4, but not so much that happy users will be compelled to change. Sony has significant marketing clout at a retail level, and you will likely be steered in that brand’s direction. Its two XM5 offerings are excellent but have substantial and worthy competition. In the end, it comes down to personal preference.
The WF-1000XM5 are smaller and more comfortable than the XM4 earbuds before them. Sony improved the active noise canceling (ANC) and tweaked the sound quality for a better overall experience too. They may be pricy, but these buds are an easy recommendation for listeners who crave customization and need a powerful microphone system.
Sony was always on a hiding to nothing with the WF-1000XM5 - get it wrong and it’s a major story, get it right (yet again) and it’s no more than we all expected. But while the company hasn’t got it ‘wrong’ exactly, the WF-1000XM5 aren’t the consummate all-rounders of the product they replace. Nonetheless these are no doubt excellent-sounding earbuds that, given their new smaller size and weight reduction, will hugely appeal to many.
The WF-1000XM5 is more than just an upgrade. Sony has improved every aspect of the earbuds, from noise cancellation and sound quality to usability and design. With the WF-1000XM5, you get an excellent overall package.
Regardless of whether these are perfect for your circumstances, however, Sony has done an admirable job of keeping their latest premium earbuds competitive. There are certain aspects of the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II and AirPods Pro 2 that I preferred over the WF-1000XM5, but overall each has its strengths and reasons for consideration. The biggest compliment I can think of is that there isn't a clear winner among those prominent three products—music lovers are being served well.
