I think the Series 8 is the sweet spot for upgrades for owners of the Apple Watch Series 4 or Series 5, or just anyone who wants a full-featured Watch experience. It will also be a great choice for those who have health conditions the Apple Watch Series 8 can help monitor, like aFib. Do I wish a bit more was different? I guess, but for what most people with an iPhone could need out of a smartwatch, the Apple Watch Series 8 has it all. Despite the growing competition, the Apple Watch still sets the standard for wearable technology.

I still have to test the Apple Watch Ultra, but I’m 99.9 percent certain that the Series 8 is the best choice for most people. Not only is it cheaper than the Ultra but also it’s the more versatile watch. It’s better suited to smaller wrist sizes, and it can be easily dressed up or down to suit all occasions. Also, unless you’re into hardcore endurance sports or a supreme klutz of the highest degree, you really don’t need the Ultra’s extra durability. The Series 8 might seem more fragile, but it’s plenty durable on its own. (But, if the Ultra is something you really want, don’t let me stop you.)
There is very little reason for Watch Series 7 owners to upgrade to the Apple Watch Series 8. Even the Watch Series 6 isn’t really too far behind this year’s model in substantive terms. However, this doesn’t mean Apple has not made progress. It’s just that old models also get the new stuff. Fresh software features see Apple take a more hardcore approach to fitness tracking, elevating this series up a league. The Apple Watch already had great GPS and heart rate hardware, and now it has more nerdy mid-exercise stat displays and a quick and easy way to create custom workouts without using third-party apps.
The good news about Apple's new and improved watch lineup is the processors should all be equally fast, but the design and features scale up. Buying last year's Series 7 if it's on sale is an excellent alternative, but the 8's biggest draw over the SE right now is its always-on display, slightly bigger screen and its extra ECG, blood oxygen and temperature sensors. Check back here over the next month or two, and we'll answer this more clearly. For now, the Apple Watch Series 8 remains an excellent piece of watch hardware with improved software and a health sensor that could be a factor down the road. But first, check your wrist: You may already have an Apple Watch that's good enough.
The Series 8 is the Goldilocks option in the current lineup of Apple smartwatches. If the $799 Apple Watch Ultra is too pricey or big for your wrist, or the $249 Apple Watch SE lacks the features you want, the $399 Apple Watch Series 8 is probably just right. The Series 8 can track your body temperature deviations, estimate the date of your last ovulation, and detect severe car crashes and automatically call for help, features that are not available on last year's model. Those features don't necessarily justify an upgrade if you already own the Series 7, especially since both versions sport the same design and Apple's new Low Power Mode is available on earlier models via watchOS 9. But if you're in the market for a feature-rich iPhone-compatible smartwatch to stay connected, keep tabs on your health, and track your fitness, the Series 8 is our Editors' Choice winner.
The Series 8 is the most minor update to the Apple Watch in a few years. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, since its predecessor was the best smartwatch available for the iPhone and that’s still true for the new model. Crash detection is a nice feature to have that you hope you’ll never use. While ovulation tracking is not new, there are only a handful of consumer wearable devices, such as certain Fitbits and the Oura Ring, that offer similar features. It is good to see more thorough women’s health tracking being added to another mainstream device. Data from the temperature sensor may also turn out to be useful for other wellness features in the future, too.
Simply put, the Apple Watch 8 is the best smartwatch for iPhone users and if it supported Android devices, it would be comfortably clear of the Galaxy Watch 5 and Google Pixel Watch – both of which simply cannot offer what this wearable can. Yet, if you have the Series 7, or even the Series 6, I don’t think there’s enough here to warrant an upgrade – unless the cycle tracking benefits are key.If you’re new to the Apple Watch, or coming from a much older model, this is the most complete option for most people. The Ultra is great for serious athletes, while the Watch SE 2 is certainly more affordable – but the Series 8 combines the best features of both. It’s not only great for health and fitness. It has access to loads of apps, gets frequent software updates, packs lovely watch faces and is very customisable.
The Apple Watch Series 8 may not be a revolutionary chapter in the Apple Watch story, but as another entry in the family, it’s a remarkably good one. If you have an iPhone, want a smartwatch, and need more functionality than what the Apple Watch SE provides, the Apple Watch Series 8 is our new go-to recommendation. Just like the Series 7, it really is that good.
My only callout is of WatchOS 9 and its abundance of updates and features: They may be overwhelming and not applicable to every user. But if you want the most comprehensive Apple Watch experience -- other than the Ultra -- then the new Series 8 is the one to get. As we often say with the latest products, if you have last year's Series 7 then there's little reason to upgrade to the Series 8. But if you're on the upgrade-hunt and have the Series 6 or earlier, the Series 8 offers a boost in features and battery life.
However, given how fully featured the Apple Watch Series 8 is elsewhere, it seems churlish to criticise it too strongly. After all, what serious sports watch also has the messaging facilities the Apple Watch does, the voice assistant and phone call support, health monitoring, smart safety features such as crash and fall detection, plus music playback, in addition to its core sports offerings? And what smartwatch also has the serious sports capabilities the Apple Watch Series 8 delivers?
But for anyone with an older Apple Watch, and especially for those who are considering their first foray into the world of smartwatches, the Series 8 is an excellent purchase. It can’t match the Ultra, but it’s better than every other Apple Watch the company has released, and for most people the fact that very little (and I mean very little) has changed since the last generation doesn’t matter–it’s simply an objectively excellent smartwatch.
The Apple Watch Series 8 stays at the top by staying the course. It doesn't offer too many hardware upgrades over its predecessor, but a new temperature sensor provides in-depth sleep and menstrual cycle tracking, while watchOS 9 brings a host of new watch faces and refreshed apps. Apple's flagship wearable doesn't fully close the door on its Android rivals, but it still has a very healthy lead.
As I've said, Series 8 is an enigma this year thanks to Apple Watch Ultra and the refresh of the SE. If you're budget conscious or looking to save money and you're in the market for an Apple Watch right now, I'd recommend either the SE or the Series 7. If you truly want the best Apple Watch money can buy, then save up a bit more and go for the Apple Watch Ultra, which despite its rugged appearance and special focus is actually the best Apple Watch for most people.
The Apple Watch 8 is one of the best smartwatches around, mostly because the Apple Watch has been getting it right since the first model. However, the Watch 8 is the smallest update we’ve ever seen to the series, with only the temperature sensor and crash detection being offered as upgrades over the Watch 7 - the new software is good and offers some nice updates, but that’s coming to many older models. Nothing has impressed us hugely about the latest model - given you can still buy new Watch 7 (or even Watch 6) units for less, we’d be more inclined to point you towards them. The Watch 8 is still the smartwatch to get if you want a good, up-to-date timepiece to go with your iPhone - but it’s definitely not going to outshine the Watch Ultra.
You’ve got to want Watch 8 specific features to swallow the leap in price. And that could be because of aesthetics – there are far more choice in terms of finish with the Watch 8. Or it could be in terms of the extra sensors on offer. Both have much to offer – you just have to decide how much you want the enhancements that Watch 8 has to offer. It’s a very worthy upgrade from a Series 4 or earlier, but Series 5, 6 or 7 users won’t find it’s worth the move up.
Annual upgraders are going to upgrade anyway. There isn't necessarily a killer feature that makes this a must-have upgrade from the Series 7 or even the Series 6. It's meant to be the best, most capable Apple Watch for your average user, and be readily available — which the Apple Watch Ultra will probably not be for a while. The new Apple Watch Series 8 now sits in the middle of the lineup. It's (barely) more capable than the new Apple Watch SE which we will be talking about soon, but won't set you back as much as the Apple Watch Ultra.
If you don’t own a recent Apple Watch, the Series 8 is a fantastic jump-in point, absolutely. It runs as good as ever, watchOS 9 is fleshed-out and reduces the need to fiddle with 3rd party solutions, and the sensors the Watch series already has (blood oxygen, heart sensor) are already doing a great job at keeping you informed about your health and helping you improve your lifestyle.
There's little in the Apple Watch Series 8 to tempt people to upgrade from recent models, but it remains an excellent balance of health, fitness, productivity and app support overall. Battery life is still much lower than dedicated fitness watches, but overall this is the smartest watch around.
Should You Buy the Apple Watch Series 8? Yes, but only if you currently don’t have an Apple Watch or if you have a Series 4 or older. While the Apple Watch Series 8 is arguably the best smartwatch on the market, Apple made minimal changes this year. There is almost no reason to upgrade if you have an Apple Watch that is relatively new. The Apple Watch isn’t a product that will receive major upgrades every year, but this year's model is arguably the smallest upgrade we've seen yet.
The Apple Watch Series 8 is a solid smartwatch for health and fitness tracking, and thanks to watchOS 9 users can now also get accurate sleep tracking data. What hasn't changed or improved a lot is the battery life, which Apple seems to have addressed with the Apple Watch Ultra, but this model isn't exactly meant for the average iPhone user. Crash Detection is a feature that no other mainstream smartwatch manufacturer has delved into yet, which is currently unique to the 2022 Apple Watch models.
It has become increasingly clear that Apple doesn’t want you to think of just yourself when buying an Apple Watch. With Family Setup, ECG, and emergency response features, your Apple Watch is more and more becoming a tool to tie us all to each other. This is the first Apple Watch that I wished my spouse had, instead of me, and the first time I’ve considered that my kid might want an Apple Watch of her own. In fact, I’m going to finish writing this review and set up an old one for her. It’s rough out there.
The Apple Watch Series 8 continues to be a must-have accessory that can help keep you fit, healthy, safe and connected. It is the best smartwatch you can buy. Apple Watch Series 8 puts so many capabilities on your wrist and continues to be an essential accessory for so many customers for their health and wellness and to keep them connected and safe.
According to the latest report from Counterpoint Research, Apple leads the global smartwatch market with 29.3% of shipments in Q2 2022, so it's no surprise that the Apple Watch Series 8 doesn't bring much change from last year's model. Added to that, the Watch Ultra is the current premium smartwatch from the Cupertino giant-and it does indeed differ quite a bit from the Series 8. So should you upgrade to ne Watch Series 8 if you already own a Series 7 model? Considering the few differences to the previous generation, my suggestion is to wait for Series 9, which should bring considerable increments to the line.
Much like the tiny, innumerable components of a quartz watch, each of which fits seamlessly into the mechanism and plays its own vital role in keeping things ticking, the Apple Watch uses pieces of hardware and software to deliver a solid, all-round experience. Encompassing aspects of health, fitness and smarts, the Apple Watch acts a benchmark for a device that helps complete an ecosystem and slots into place, adding value to the chain in its own special way. For an iPhone user looking for a premium lifestyle smartwatch, the Apple Watch Series 8 should be the defacto choice.
The Apple Watch Series 8 offers the best bang for your buck to those who want the latest and greatest features in a svelte package. It’s got all the bells and whistles to satisfy all but the most intrepid explorers, and it comes in two sizes that should work for almost anyone. You can save money with an aluminum GPS model, or splash out on a stainless steel case and bouge it up with proprietary bands and cellular connectivity too. If you’re questioning whether you should pick the Ultra instead, you probably shouldn’t. For a slim and lightweight Apple Watch experience that doesn’t sacrifice features, the Series 8 won’t disappoint.
