I’d personally lean towards the M2 Air — the thinner design and better screen are very compelling for me — but only if I was willing to spend $1,500 or more to get one with at least 512GB of storage and perhaps 16GB of RAM. If that’s just too much for your budget, then the M1 Air remains an excellent option.
The MacBook Air M2 is the best laptop for those willing to spend a little bit more for a great laptop. It delivers top-notch performance, over 14 hours of battery life and a bright and colorful display all in a delightfully portable design.
Combined with class-leading battery life of about 16 hours, rapid performance of the M2 chip and a top-class trackpad and keyboard, you have the best premium consumer laptop available.

That’s a shame because, in general, the M2 MacBook Air is a triumph. It’s slim, light and attractive. Its battery will last you all day and then some. Its fanless design means it runs completely silently. And it’s a more capable laptop from a performance perspective than any rival Windows ultraportable.
After we already tested the basic version of the new MacBook Air M2 extensively, now the upgrades are only able to impress us to a limited extent. Because of the speed problems with the new 256-GB drives, particularly the larger and faster SSD will probably make most sense for consumers.
It’s remarkable to think how far the MacBook Air has come since 2008. It used to be overpriced and underpowered, a testament to Apple’s tendency towards style over substance. Since then, the entire PC industry jumped aboard the ultraportable bandwagon, and Apple found a way to pack a ton of power into a razor-thin case. Now, the MacBook Air is arguably Apple’s best laptop yet.
The new sleek design and improved performance of the M2 MacBook Air would make it a must-have upgrade if it had the same price as the 2020 edition with M1 chip. However, the higher price means that many users may prefer to stick with the M1 version for now -- especially if battery life is a top priority. However, if you've got the budget, the M2 MacBook Air is one of the lightest and most elegant ultraportable laptops we've seen, and once more throws down the gauntlet to its Windows-based rivals.
If you have a MacBook Air M1, the performance jump alone here isn’t enough to make the M2 version a “must buy.” If you’re coming from an Intel Mac, though, it’s the best MacBook Air Apple has ever made, and the changes thanks to Apple Silicon will be transformative.
The M2 processor, just like its M1 and M1 Pro predecessors, keeps this new MacBook Air running real fast. This isn’t terribly surprising, as top-of-the-line performance is one of the reasons people are so willing to pay the exorbitant "Apple tax" on every device the company makes. We expect greatness from Apple products and that’s what this new MacBook Air provides.
The Apple MacBook Air (2022, M2) is a massive upgrade to an already iconic laptop. From the new design to the added features and the beefed-up M2 chip, this is the best version of the MacBook Air that Apple has ever made.
The M1 MacBook Air felt like a confident step into the future for Apple's most portable computer, and the 2022 M2 MacBook Air feels like a fitting leap forward. If you need portable power, a great keyboard, and a beautiful and sturdily designed laptop, the new MacBook Air ticks practically every box.
Incredibly impressed by its speedy performance, we’re astounded that this little laptop can keep up with our most demanding image processing requests and not break a sweat. There are no fans to whir and it doesn’t seem to heat up under pressure. A crystal clear display and comfortable trackpad and keyboard are complemented by a Magsafe power connector and two USB-C ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack for a minimal but utilitarian finish.
The MacBook Air M2 (2022) is an exceptional laptop. It’s fast, packs a great display and has a sleek design that borrows the modern looks of its pricier Pro sibling and makes it a load more portable. Battery life is strong enough for a busy work day and the M2 processor doesn’t just chew through basic tasks but is more than capable of running through more ‘pro’ tasks with ease
Would I trade the design elements, webcam, bigger screen and other upgrades for the slightly faster M2 MacBook Pro performance? I would not. If you think you'll be hitting the ceiling of M2 performance, then you're more likely in the market for a 14-inch MacBook Pro or a Mac Studio.
But these are minor niggles. Fact is, the new MacBook Air is, without doubt, the MacBook that most people should buy. Even Windows users shopping for a new notebook should at least check out the new MacBook Air out at a nearby Apple Store. It might change your mind. It’s super portable, well-built, has a nice display, good performance, excellent battery life, runs silently and cool, and is relatively well-priced (if you go light on the options).
The Apple MacBook Air is great for business use. It has a sturdy aluminum chassis and is very portable, thanks to its thin and light design. Its M2 SoC is powerful enough to handle most productivity tasks, like text formatting, spreadsheets, and presentations, and you can even do some occasional photo and video editing.
The M1 Air is inarguably a better deal, but the MacBook Air M2 is a better laptop. For me, that answer is yes. As is the case so often with iterative consumer tech, it’s the little touches that make the difference, and the MacBook Air M2’s quality-of-life changes improve the quality of the overall experience (the slower SSD excluded).
Apple's new M2 SoC is a decent incremental update over the M1 but if you're expecting a dramatic improvement like we got going from Intel to Apple silicon, then that's not the case. Depending on your video editing or transcoding workflow, you may or may not see an improvement going from M1 to M2.
The Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (M2, 2022) comes with Apple's latest M2 chip and offers excellent performance and battery life. However, there's no new design here, and with the new MacBook Air snapping at its heels, this laptop feels a bit redundant in some aspects.
The new MacBook Air comes with a gorgeous new design, bigger and brighter screen and improved performance. It's basically everything a creative professional would want from an upgrade - but its new (higher) price may put some people off.
Undoubtedly, the best area to performance comes when all of Apple's accelerators can be used in tandem, and that's usually the case in video production where the M2 is at its best. For video creators we think this is hard to beat, thanks to features like ProRes hardware acceleration, a fast GPU, and relatively low power consumption which allows for near-silent use while editing.
As for "power users" they, unsurprisingly, should be shopping in Apple's MacBook Pro aisles. If you're regularly doing video editing, want to play games, or do graphically-intensive tasks, the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips are still markedly ahead. For the rest of us, who just want macOS on something sleek, silent, and highly portable, the 2022 MacBook Air M2 delivers that in spades.
The MacBook Air, with a thin redesign, powerful M2 chip, a 1080p webcam and a bright display breathes new life into Apple's most popular laptop. But its $1,199 starting price is a lot for what’s become a mainstream laptop, and the M2 still only supports one external display.
The M1 MacBook Air was an excellent example of the compact notebook form factor. The M2 version continues the story. Compared to the M2 13-inch MacBook Pro, the M2 MacBook Air is the better overall package by a wide margin. With Apple's thorough modernization of the classic lightweight MacBook Air, there are very few reasons anyone should go for the Pro over the Air.
We think the M2 MacBook Air is beautiful, powerful and just about the best silent laptop you can buy for music production. We can safely say that, after making music on laptops for more than 20 years, the Air M2 is the music production laptop we've been waiting for.
In my personal life, I’m not a MacBook user. Nothing personal, I just want the ability to play AAA titles in my downtime. However, after playing with the MacBook Air M2, I definitely want to beg my IT department to swap out my current MacBook for this beauty. It’s a tantalizing mix of portability and performance that makes it perfect for my current hybrid work situation where I go into the office 1-2 days a week.
The M2 MacBook Air builds on the already excellent foundation established by the M1 MacBook Air. The new design is stylish, very portable and a pleasure to use. The larger 13.4in Liquid Retina display gives you more space than before, and the M2 chip delivers noticeably better performance with class-topping battery life. All up, with the New MacBook Air with M2 chip onboard, there’s little that anyone would want from a laptop intended for day-to-day use, and we absolutely love the new Midnight colour!
This unit embarrasses the recent MacBook Pro, leaves the M1 Air in the dust, and even gives the 14in Pro a run for its money. You only need that unit if you demand more raw power, use several external displays (the M2 only supports one), or can’t stomach the idea of a laptop without ‘Pro’ in its name. (Which is now doubly absurd, since this new Air even looks like a Pro – albeit one that’s cut down on carbs.)
The all-new MacBook Air with M2 silicon is a revelation: redesigned, reinvigorated, revolutionary. It's super powerful, has excellent battery life, and aside from some heat due to no fan cooling and the inclusion of a notch on that new 13.6-inch screen, it's a laptop that's truly hard to fault.
The MacBook Air M2 remains Apple’s least expensive laptop, but it’s certainly not cheap. It is, however, well worth the money and an easy recommendation for anyone with an Intel Mac or a Windows machine looking to make the jump. If the new design is a big bonus for you, then it could be worth switching from the M1 MacBook Air, too.
Let’s wrap up this review of the Apple MacBook Air M2. This is one heck of a portable machine—I can’t deny that. From its overhauled design, nicer display, better speakers, and webcam, to the all-new M2 silicon, there’s a lot to love about this machine. But as we’ve discovered throughout this review, the $200 cheaper, or occasionally even $350 cheaper Apple MacBook Air M1 from 2020 isn’t that far behind the M2 Air.
