The new M1 processor with ARM architecture makes an impressive debut in the MacBook Air. In CPU as well as GPU performance, comparable chips from Intel and AMD are surpassed in terms of the theoretical raw performance - and this is the entry-level configuration of the Air.

The outside is the same winning formula from the start of the year. The M1 chip is genuinely a gamechanger, making the MacBook Air one of the fastest computers available in any form factor. It can do pretty much anything you would demand of a hulking big workstation, let alone a thin, light, fanless package that lasts twice as long as rivals on battery.
I often call the MacBook Air the most universally useful laptop you can buy. The latest version swaps out Intel CPUs with Apple's own M1 chip, but it'll be a transparent transition for most. After all, MacBook Air users are usually looking for a sleek, reasonably priced machine that just works.
Not much else is new compared to the Air's predecessor. Documentaries like Secrets of the Saqqara Tomb look really sharp on the 13.3-inch screen, and as Safari now supports 4K HDR with Netflix in the latest Big Sur update, series like Planet Earth show off some dazzlingly rich colors.
Apple seriously powered up the Air with its move to Apple Silicon when this M1 model launched. So much so that it was hard to suggest you should plump for the MacBook Pro 13-inch over it – you had to really need the fan for sustained high performance over a longer time. Things have changed a little now, with the M2 MacBook Air having arrived and the M2 MacBook Pro 13-inch, but the M1 MacBook Air is still an excellent device.
There will always be things to complain about – like getting just two USB ports and a headphone socket for connectivity, for example, or the base model’s weird 7-core GPU, but honestly, if you look at the design quality, the performance, the screen and its everyday ergonomic finesse, the MacBook Air M1 is just phenomenal. And for what you get, it’s not even very expensive.
The MacBook Air (M1, 2020) is the ideal laptop for most people, because it does the thing all great computers should: it just gets out of your way. It's so fast that it'll never slow you down. It'll pretty much always have charge. It doesn't get loud or overly hot. It's comfortable and light.
Apple has made the thinnest and slimmest significant jump forward in performance with the MacBook Air M1 (2020). Apple’s M1 chip in the new MacBook Air is an achievement. I pushed this laptop and its powerful Apple-made processor to its maximum capacity for a week of testing, and they exceeded my expectations on practically every level.
