The Apple AirPods (2nd generation) Truly Wireless are practically the same as the Apple AirPods (1st generation) Truly Wireless, with slight differences. They have a similar sound profile that lacks low bass, and their design is the same as the older model, but you can now purchase them with a case that supports wireless Qi charging, which is nice. Their one-size-fits-all design isn't ideal for everyone, but if you do manage a good fit, they're very comfortable.
Despite being a few years old at this point, the AirPods 2 are still at the top of the heap for iPhone owners. Apple has given people what they want with wireless charging and a hands-free approach to Siri. And the fact that the buds offer longer talk time and faster pairing are icing on the cake, especially since the old AirPods' pairing was near instantaneous. There are now much better options out there for a bit more money — like the AirPods 3 or the AirPods Pro 2 that we mentioned earlier — but folks looking for a great pair of wireless earbuds that work seamlessly with their iOS devices could do a lot worse than these.
If you haven’t yet jumped on the AirPods train and you know they’ll fit in your ears (if the wired EarPods that come with every iPhone fit you, the AirPods will, too), they are still among the best truly wireless headphones on the market, with great battery life, solid connectivity, great ease of use, and pretty good sound quality. They even work great for Android users, just like the first model. The new wireless charging convenience comes at an increased price, but for most people, the AirPods are still hard to beat.
The hands-free Siri feature is a welcome addition and the charging case improvements are nice, but the new AirPods don't represent a significant step forward from the previous model—but they cost $40 more. The on-ear controls are still awkward, the battery life hasn't significantly improved, and the lack of water resistance and fit stabilization are hard to overlook. If the AirPods offered the best audio performance in the true wireless category, this could all be forgiven. Instead, without an in-canal seal, the sound can suffer even while the drivers themselves are capable of delivering deep bass and crisp highs.

New features like wireless charging and faster pairing are useful, but the Apple AirPods (2019) aren’t a significant improvement over their predecessors, with the same lackluster audio performance and design. The battery life leaves something to be desired, too. Still, you shouldn't write off the AirPods completely. Two years since their launch, and they (along with the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max) are still the best true wireless earbuds for those that want excellent connectivity that works with the wider Apple ecosystem. Plus, their advancing age means that you can often find discounts on the wireless earbuds.
Apple has strengthened the AirPods in the areas they were already strong and chosen to leave their weaknesses more or less as they are. It’s an odd approach, but the success of the first-generation model proves that the formula works. We’d love them to fit more people better and to have some physical controls, but Apple is sticking to its guns, and does at least now offer the AirPods Pros to those looking for more. Besides, the sound quality of the standard AirPods has improved, and that’s more than we were expecting.
We review 1-year old Apple AirPods 2 to see what you can expect after they age a bit (battery life drops…). The short summary: the Apple AirPods 2 are simple true wireless earbuds that sound okay for the price and look good to the Apple-conscious. Still, you can’t expect them to be better than the AirPods Pro, which have an in-ear design and a higher price tag. Due to the classical earphone shape, you get lower levels of bass and noise isolation.
Wireless charging, though nice, isn't something essential. First-generation AirPods owners, meanwhile, probably can afford to wait until Apple's AirPods 3 arrive – that is, unless their battery life has already started to decline. At that point, given the cost of replacing the batteries works out to basically the price of a new set of AirPods 2, the upgrade is a no-brainer. Setting aside the environmental impact of that reality, I think the price-to-value balance works out. If you keep a set of the cheapest AirPods, first- or second-generation, for two years, it works out to about $0.22 a day. That sounds like a pretty decent deal for the convenience AirPods brought to my daily life and, though they may not be perfect, AirPods 2 are simply more of a good thing.
The new AirPods are here, but they are an incremental upgrade, the equivalent of an S series iPhone. The changes enhance an already excellent, truly wireless headphone, and if you were on the fence about buying the AirPods, there's enough here in the way of improvements, particularly always-on Siri and better noise filtering during calls, to get you off that fence. But Apple owners looking for a different fit, improved sound, additional color options or other rumored upgrades will have to wait for a true AirPods sequel -- or maybe the PowerBeats Pro, an upcoming alternative from Apple-owned Beats.
If you're looking to just listen to music or a few podcasts, the new AirPods are a good choice since the connection never drops and the battery life is longer than the previous version. Plus you can also charge the case wirelessly with any Qi wireless charger. Just don't expect to get a great sound experience and know that some of the cool features like auto-pause and "Hey Siri" functionality are iOS-only.
If you’re happy with your current pair of AirPods and aren’t fussed with wireless charging, there’s little reason to upgrade here. There isn’t a noticeable sound improvement and many of the issues with the first-gen product still remain. If you’re coming to AirPods for the first time, and you’re deep inside Apple’s ever-growing ecosystem then there isn’t a better pair of wireless earphones out there – if they fit and stay in your ears, that is. The connection and setup is flawless and the battery life excellent. Even if you’re an Android user then the AirPods remain a good buy, even if you do miss out on that easy pairing and Siri functionality.
Despite the fact that they are a few years old, the AirPods 2019 remain a good option for many iPhone users. They still sound good, but not great. The charging case is excellent, and removing one earbud to automatically pause music works flawlessly. While new features like the wireless charging as well as faster pairing are convenient, the AirPods 2019 aren’t a significant upgrade over their predecessors. If you only want to listen to casual music or podcasts, the AirPods 2019 are a good option for iPhone owners. The overall battery life is decent, and the connection remains solid.
The AirPods are now more enticing than ever, but those still rocking the first model might find it hard to justify the upgrade, especially as the wireless charging case is compatible with both generations. While the improved battery life and hands-free Siri experience afforded by the H1 chip are handy enhancements, £160 (or £200 if you want wireless) is a lot of money just to save you a double tap. Although they fall some way short of being the perfect evolution, the 2nd generation AirPods are better than ever.
In the end, I've been perfectly pleased to add the new AirPods to my daily routine. That doesn't mean they're exactly what I was hoping for -- more-significant changes to sound quality would've been nice, as would a design that did more to block out ambient sound. Even so, all the work Apple did to smooth out the few rough edges in the AirPods experience makes these pricey earbuds a more worthwhile purchase. If you already have a set of AirPods and their batteries are still holding up, you can put your wallet away and rest easy knowing you're not missing much. But if you're an iPhone or iPad user who has been waiting to take the plunge on the AirPods, there's no question: These are the most convenient wireless earbuds you'll ever use.
While the negatives are still notable, the positives with the 2019 Apple AirPods are their saving graces: it’s the same sound with better connectivity, Siri integration, and more battery life. And depending on the sort of person you are, you can free yourself from even more cables with a wireless charging case. For many, these upgrades will make all the difference, and while Apple’s AirPower is dead in the water, the standard of wireless charging is now ubiquitous that finding a supported charger isn’t going to be hard, you just might have to settle for one that isn’t made by Apple.
Any way you look at it, Apple's new AirPods are not a worthwhile upgrade if you already own their first-generation predecessor. There just isn't enough new in the slightly upgraded headphones to justify the purchase, unless you've been eagerly awaiting wireless Qi charging to come to the headphones. Even then you could purchase the $99 charging case separately and use it with the first-gen AirPods. The headphones desperately need some form of noise isolation and it's disappointing Apple hasn't included the feature in its second-generation AirPods.
In conclusion, the new AirPods are a great piece of tech, just like the original ones. We would have loved it if Apple had upgraded the sound quality a little, but sadly that's not the case. Still, the improvements made to latency and other wireless operations are definitely great and welcome. Battery life didn't get a major upgrade, but it's still among the best in class, so we can't really complain. If you own the original AirPods and your batteries are still holding up, there is no need to upgrade to the second-gen AirPods, because the improvements aren't that big. For all those that are just now getting into the truly wireless headphone world, the new AirPods are a great choice.

The 2019 (2nd Generation) AirPods haven’t changed enough to force current users to upgrade. But they’re still a fantastic-sounding pair of earbuds that deliver the performance, quality, and seamless integration we expect from Apple—with a premium price tag to match.
If you're planning on using the AirPods primarily for listening to music, the first-generation model is still a viable choice and it sells for roughly Rs. 2,500 less online. You get more or less the same battery life, and audio quality is identical to that of the newer model. However, if you use Siri a lot during your commute or take a lot of calls, spending the extra money for the second-generation AirPods might be worth it. The top-end option with the wireless charging case is too expensive, in our opinion. We can see the appeal of having this feature because it could be handy when you don't have a cable around and with wireless chargers becoming more common. However, a Rs. 4,000 premium for this is a bit too much.
If you already own a pair of AirPods, you probably shouldn’t upgrade to the latest model. The improvements in switching speed and latency aren’t game-changers, and the ability to use Siri hands-free, while useful, isn’t worth the cost alone. Those who make a lot of long phone calls will love how much longer the battery lasts, but everyone else will notice no real difference in longevity. If you haven’t bought AirPods yet, the improvements in this second-generation model make them a little more compelling. Still, we can’t help but anxiously await a true successor to Apple’s near-ubiquitous wireless headphones.
For those deep in the Apple ecosystem, Apple’s AirPods may still make the most sense — as long as you’re not a heavy sweater or rain walker. That said, I’d push such users who want to save some cash to Apple’s first-gen AirPods first if you can get a good deal. For everyone else, it’s well worth doing some serious shopping around before just grabbing the AirPods, starting with our constantly updated list of the best true wireless earbuds. The AirPods are still contenders, but they’re far from the only game in town in 2019. And the competition is only getting stiffer.
