The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live is a baffling product: the earbuds boast noise cancelling without the crucial ability to seal to the ear. Yet, the noise cancelling actually works to some degree. Listeners who like the idea of being aware of their surroundings, and want something that makes a statement will be drawn to these earphones. They fit better than the AirPods, and include wireless charging to boot. If you aren't compelled by the Galaxy Buds Live, consider the Galaxy Buds Plus instead.
The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live Truly Wireless are unusually-designed noise cancelling truly wireless earbuds. They have a distinctive look, feel surprisingly stable and comfortable, and have a slightly warm and well-balanced sound profile that will suit a broad range of audio content. Despite having noise cancelling (ANC), they're not the best choice of earbuds for overall noise isolation, though they're surprisingly effective in filtering out low-frequency ambient noise, like bus or plane engines. Their slightly open fit generates a more spacious but also less consistent listening experience than most in-ears.
Samsung has delivered yet another impressive set of wireless earbuds with the Galaxy Buds Live, which offer great overall sound quality, strong battery life and lots of handy features within a uniquely comfortable design. The earbuds offer a nice amount of customization options via Samsung’s companion app, and Galaxy-exclusive features such as hands-free Bixby control and a gaming mode are a nice touch.
So there’s a lot of good, but the Galaxy Buds Live aren’t without faults. For one, they’re only rated IPX2 for water and sweat resistance, which is less durable than wireless earbuds from other manufacturers in 2020. I’d be a little worried about them in the rain or if you sweat a lot at the gym. These aren’t destined to be fitness buds, which is disappointing since they’ve got a design that helps you stay aware when out running. And like most other true wireless earbuds besides those from Jabra, the Buds Live can only connect to a single device at a time.
The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live are good – but not great – true wireless earbuds. They have a number of neat features and offer a combined 28-hour battery life, but their sound isn’t amazing, and the noise cancellation has a lot of room for improvement. They’re certainly unique, but those interested in high-end sound quality and excellent ANC over a conversation-starting design should look elsewhere.

Like the in-ear models Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus and Galaxy Buds 2, the mid-tones on the Buds Live perform above average. Center-mid instruments like guitars and piano play have a natural tonality, meaning they're not too warm, dark, cold, or bright. By pushing the mid-tones forward, these instruments aren't just well-represented, they're even dynamic, reaching lower tones as easily as higher ones. In high quality recordings, you can easily hear the clonks for heavier piano key strokes, or plucking of strings.
Our main issue with the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live, though, is simply down to sound quality. Yes, they produce a hefty and full-bodied sound, but it’s a sound that lacks dynamism and excitement. Their lack of enthusiasm, combined with a tendency to trip over themselves rhythmically, means they struggle to hold the listener’s attention. For all the positives brought about by the new design, these buds are still left in the wake of some rival in-ears when it comes to one key area: sound quality.
Those seeking a pair of earbuds they can wear all day while keeping their ear canals clear to hear what’s going on around them may get some mileage out of the Buds Live. The bean-shaped design makes for a very comfortable fit and audio is above-average for open earbuds. However, if you’re after decent noise cancellation, look elsewhere. Calling the Galaxy Buds Live’s ANC light touch would be doing them a favour – it’s practically non-existent. You’d be far better served by any of the in-ear entries on our Best noise-cancelling headphones list.
Since the latter seal your ear canals completely with silicone tips, they of course offer better background noise isolation. Galaxy Buds Plus can also have a slightly better sound quality, which is a bit fuller, with a dedicated woofer and tweeter drivers. Apart from active noise cancellation, they othwerwise similar to the Galaxy Buds Live. Both have IPX2 water resistance, use touch controls and Galaxy Wearable app for various features, use proprietary Samsung Scalable Codec, and have similar microphone quality.
Although Samsung's range of true wireless earphones has been pretty good thus far, the Galaxy Buds Live is a bit of a fall from grace for the Korean company. It isn't bad by any means, but the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live simply doesn't offer enough other than style to justify its Rs. 14,990 price tag. Much of its lack of capability has to do with its rather radical design; the earphones look and feel great, but this design and fit simply don't make for very good sound quality or active noise cancellation.
The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live try to change the game of how true wireless earbuds work, but ultimately they come up against physics. Their odd, loose fit means the music doesn't connect with you in the way it does with earbuds that have a proper seal. The active noise cancellation, meanwhile, appears to be a false promise. Ultimately, the older Galaxy Buds+ offer a better fit and sound for less money. If you want to best in true wireless active noise cancellation, meanwhile, you're going to need to spend more on the $249 Apple AirPods Pro. And if you're just looking for wire-free earphones for your Android phone, check out the $79 OnePlus Buds.
The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live are a pair of attractive bean-shaped true wireless earbuds with good sound and a unique fit. If you don’t like silicone ear tips that block your ear canal, these earbuds are for you. They are light, secure and don’t protrude or have stalks. They sound better than open-fit rivals such as the AirPods but their active noise cancelling is only effective for deep rumbles. They last a long time between charges, have a good, compact and pocketable case, and work with Android, iOS, Windows and others.
I've spent a lot of time talking about the sound and the features of these earbuds, but it's really their design that's the standout feature. I get a lot of these types of earbuds in for review and this is the first one in a while that I thought was really innovative and different. They're pretty unique-looking, discreet and not only do they fit securely but they're comfortable to wear for long periods. Alas, the noise canceling isn't what I hoped it would be, but it is a challenge to do with open earbuds like these. Even so, they're easily among the best earbuds of 2020.
Samsung deserves credit for taking the risk on a weird new design with the Buds Live, not least because for the most part these deliver on their promise. They’re extremely comfortable, surprisingly stable, and honestly after a while you do sort of forget the whole beans bit. Audio quality is strong, but don’t get drawn in by the promise of active noise cancellation: the tech is here, but for the most part it’s just playing catch-up to make up for the complete lack of passive noise blocking.
Samsung took some risks with its noise-canceling true wireless earbuds. Design-wise, the Galaxy Buds Live offer a more comfortable fit that sits outside of your ear canal. Of course, that means there are some sacrifices to sound quality and the effectiveness of the ANC. When you add in mediocre audio and the battery life caveats, these are hard to recommend. If Samsung can iron out a few of these issues, the Galaxy Buds Live could be a compelling option, but that may be hard to do because of the design.
The Galaxy Buds Live aren't only the most unique wireless earbuds to hit the market in a long time, they're also among the best you can buy. The Buds Live are incredibly comfortable, and thanks to the original design, can fit in ears of all shapes and sizes. They also sound great, have excellent battery life, and a fully-featured companion app that elevates the experience. If you set your expectations for what active noise canceling can do for earbuds with an open-ear design, the Galaxy Buds Live still stand out in 2022.
Considering they're likely to go with you everywhere, it's important your earphones tick a lot of boxes – and the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live do exactly that. Combining a stylish and unique look with decent active noise cancelling, spacious sound and a range of other handy features, they're among the best offerings in the mid-price bracket.
If noise cancelling is a must-have, then you’ll need to invest in the AirPods Pro as they have the goods in that department. And for those of us with smaller ears, it’s the more comfortable option. But the audio quality compared to the Live is definitely lacking. And the AirPods Pro is considerably more expensive. Overall, if you’re looking for long-lasting, fast-charging and great-sounding truly wireless buds that look like expensive jewelry, there’s no other choice than the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live.
The audio quality is excellent aside from weak bass, and the sound leakage is low enough that no one will hear it in most situations. The open design also allows some sound from the outside world in, which limits when and where I want to use the Beans. I usually prefer earbuds the block out the world, but not everyone agrees. Noise-canceling is supposed to provide that as an option, but it's ineffective without a fully sealed in-ear design. I've settled on leaving ANC off when using the Beans because it doesn't provide enough benefit to justify the loss of battery life. Without ANC, I can use the Beans almost all day.
The main competition for the Buds Live is the Apple Airpods Pro. At the cost of $250, the Apple Airpods are the highest-tier earbuds in the Apple products line. Unlike the Galaxy Buds Live, the Airpods offers a more customizable fit with silicone eartips and offers seamless pairing with iPhones. Equalizer settings aren’t nearly quite so customizable and touch controls aren’t remappable, but the H1 chip puts it head and shoulders above the Buds Live when it comes to noise cancellation.
The Galaxy Buds Live can be thought of as a casual pair of earbuds that are likely to suit you just fine at home or in the garden – but it’s tough not to recommend customers look at investing in the Galaxy Buds Pro instead. Perhaps that is the strategy here from Samsung. Overall, I could recommend them for home use to those who have managed to try them on before purchase. However, I’d have a tough time making a broad recommendation when so much of the experience is dependent on ear shape and size.
The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live are an excellent option in this crowded product category. Memorable design and good sound make the wireless earbuds worth their $170 price tag, as long as you don’t plan to use them for exercising. If noise cancellation is not a must for you, consider Samsung’s own Galaxy Buds+ instead. They have a more secure fit with better noise isolation, excellent audio quality, and handy touch controls for less.
The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live is a good choice for most consumers out there. With Galaxy Note 20 Ultra pre-order customers getting it for free, it’s a pretty solid free gift. You get good sound quality, reliable touch-based controls, it’s very comfortable to use, easy to bring around, has ANC, and it works great for calls. However, not everyone will feel the same level of comfort as I do as it highly depends on your ear size. Moreover, IPX2 resistance would mean that you can’t use this for workouts or people who sweat a lot in general. Then there’s the lack of high-quality audio codecs like aptX, and it would be nice if the charging case could hold more charges.
The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live makes for an exciting addition to Samsung’s TWS portfolio that already includes the Galaxy Buds and Galaxy Buds Plus. The unique bean-shaped design may have raised our curious eyebrows, but they work surprisingly well. Our biggest issue with the Buds Live is the ANC performance, which is not great. But if you can overlook the poor noise cancellation, the Buds are a delightful pair of truly wireless earbuds. The sound quality is really good and I enjoyed listening to most genres with the right sound preset. I also liked the stable connectivity and call quality as well. Lastly, the Buds Live earbuds deliver a solid battery life, allowing you to go a full week without needing to charge the case if you’re a mild user.
For me, the Galaxy Buds Live are the perfect wireless earbuds. They sound great, are comfortable and fit snugly enough in my ears for how I use them. It's disappointing that active noise-cancellation isn't quite as effective as I hoped, but the feature still helps block out minor background noise. The fact that Samsung's new earbuds only cost $249 compared to the AirPods Pro's $329 price tag, is also a worth noting, especially given it's easier to use the Galaxy Buds Live with more devices when compared to Apple's high-end earbuds. Of all the wireless earbuds I've used over the last few years, the Buds Live are my favourite by a slim margin. The Galaxy Buds Live feature excellent sound quality, reasonably strong bass and most importantly for me, are incredibly comfortable.
The battery capacity in each earbud is 60 mAh, while the case holds an extra 472 mAh. According to Samsung, 5 minutes of quick charging is enough for one hour of play time. In the most optimal conditions, with ANC and Bixby off, the Galaxy Buds are to last up to 29 hours on a single charge. With ANC and Bixby on, that's down to about 21 hours of play time. Without using the case whatsoever, those estimates stand at 8 and 6 hours respectively. Talk time is up to 19 hours on a charge with ANC off, and 17 hours with it on. If using the earbuds on their own, without occasionally placing them in their case for recharging, that's down to 5.5 and 4.5 hours respectively.
Samsung has been known for its innovations and the same can be seen in its latest earbuds, Galaxy Buds Live. The Galaxy Buds Live comes with a unique bean-shaped design and packs a lot of features for less than 5K, making it a great set of TWS earbuds. For starters, the earbuds come with ANC and wireless charging support. You’ll be pretty happy with the audio quality and the clarity these earbuds provide. There’s a lot more that these earbuds offer. However, do they still provide value for money? I have been using the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live for about a week, and here’s my review of the same.
