The 10.2in iPad is still the best tablet for most people offering an unbeatable combination of value, performance, software and longevity. It’s not flash and it has some older technology, such as the lightning cable and wifi5, but its old design means accessories made for many previous models still fit. Doubling the storage to 64GB is welcome, the faster chip and better display too, but it is the Centre Stage auto-tracking video call camera that is a biggest upgrade and will be particularly useful.
But if you're shopping for a new tablet, it's hard to find something better than the iPad 2021 in the same price range. If you're open to Android, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 is a more expensive tablet with a great screen and better battery life than the iPad 2021, plus it comes with a stylus packed in. If you'd like to ditch the dated design of the iPad, upgrading to the $599 iPad Air 2020 gets you a speedier Apple tablet with support for the Magic Keyboard and 2nd Gen Apple Pencil, but it costs hundreds of dollars more and offers slightly less battery life.
The iPad 10.2 (2021) is this year’s best-value tablet from Apple. It’s faster than its predecessor, it’s easy to use and it features an upgraded selfie camera that makes video calling smoother than ever before. Other upgrades are incremental, such as the inclusion of True Tone technology that adjusts the display to suit your surroundings, but for those who want an affordable tablet and don’t need the most up-to-date technology, it’s a worthwhile purchase.
For 2021, I think the basic unexciting iPad wins out. Especially for the price, which usually hits $300 for holiday season sales. But other sales could change that metric fast. The iPad Air is better, and last year's eighth-gen iPad is perfectly fine still, too -- if that's on sale for a steep discount, it's worth considering. If you already have last year's iPad there's no need to upgrade. But if you've been waiting a few years and need one soon for the kids or family, here's your choice.
Overall, I could do just about everything I can with my iPad Pro on the new iPad. There are a few slight changes and compromises here — but for the consumers Apple is targeting, those things might be moot. The iPad remains a very good tablet at a fair price. If you want something more modern, I don’t blame you, and would instead point you toward the iPad Air, which hits a sweet spot of performance, features and price.
Put simply, the iPad 10.2 from any of the last three years is the best value tablet you can buy. Apple supports the heck out of these things from a software standpoint, and they have the power to spare. The only issues I have with the iPad 10.2 (2021) are the same issues I had with previous generations. The screen is not bright enough, the TouchID sensor is slow, and it still uses a Lightning connector. But there’s still a robust app ecosystem, moving into a new iPad is ridiculously easy, and at the risk of using a cliché, the iPad usually just works.

The iPad 10.2-inch (9th Gen) is an excellent budget tablet, and this new version fixes the two biggest gripes I had with its predecessor. It's just as capable for creative work as it is for watching YouTube, making it the cheap tablet you can do the most with.
The iPad was the first tablet of the type that we know today, and while our review unit is only Apple's most affordable entry-level product in this segment, it gets a lot right and is, in the end, a very good tablet. It provides a first-class feel, high performance, and a long life cycle. Some manufacturers could take a page out of Apple's book.
So, on the one hand, I could criticise the regular iPad 10.2 for its somewhat dated design (now in only two colours) and nitpick about having old wireless standards and speakers at the same end, but the truth is, the average person buying this model from Apple’s range won’t care or likely even notice. Double the storage, a new processor, hugely upgraded front camera and improved screen are by no means small additions.
Apple perfected the tablet equation with the iPad, and there isn't a single competitor that comes close to the iPad in performance and price. At $329 on a bad day and $299 on most days, there's really no reason not to get the iPad if you're in the market for a tablet for daily tasks. You get access to the App Store and countless apps designed specifically for the iPad, and with improvements made in iPadOS 15, it's now easier to multitask. If you really want to push the iPad to its limits, add a Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil, and you have yourself a very capable laptop replacement for under $600.
Apple has used the September 2021 iPhone event to launch a pair of new iPads as well — the brand-new iPad mini and a refresh of the entry-level iPad 10.2” line. It’s here to replace the Apple iPad 10.2 (2020) and introduces enough upgrades to make it worth picking up over the previous model.
Although Apple’s entry-level iPad hasn’t seen a design refresh in years, it also hasn't seen a price increase, and for $329, the ninth-generation iPad is a killer deal. It performs better than pricier Android competitors, has a nice display well-suited for work and play, and will receive OS updates for years to come. The 12MP front-facing camera and the addition of Center Stage are also welcome upgrades for people who are working (or just video chatting) from home. And while iPadOS 15 may not be a full-on replacement for macOS or Windows, it's Apple’s most capable tablet OS to date.
Apple didn't do a whole lot to improve its baseline tablet year over year, but then it didn't really have to. No other $300 tablet delivers the same level of performance and appeal as the iPad. The faster processor and better user-facing camera only sweeten the deal.
People I know often ask me what laptop or tablet they should buy and, if the budget is low, I’ll invariably ask: “Have you considered buying an iPad?” That’s because the cheapest Apple tablet is a wonderfully flexible machine that I know will do the job for them and you can relegate it to use as a mere web browser or a Netflix viewer.
This is the new entry-level iPad, and it's the iPad that many people will, and should, buy. It's better, has a few cool new features, and will last you years barring any major accidents. As long as you aren't expecting any "pro" features and are okay with the old design, then the iPad (2021) is a near-perfect tablet for everyone. Of course, if you have the iPad (2020), I'm not sure it's worth upgrading — unless you really love the idea of Center Stage — but if you have the iPad 7 or older, this is a no-brainer.
The iPad 9th Generation doesn’t have many significant upgrades over its predecessor (which itself was an iterative update on the iPad 7th Generation), and this feels like a model for those who haven’t upgraded for a while. However, the improvements are relevant and well executed, keeping this affordable tablet at the forefront of the ‘all rounder’ domain.
Overall, Apple's entry-level iPad carries a lot of baggage that the other models have already left behind. The camera is only a means to an end, the Lightning port is not "USB-C" enough, and the display also falls far behind in terms of technical terms. You also have to make do without 5G. Apple mixes that up with a fast processor, high-quality build, and an operating system that finally optimizes tablets for their primary purpose.
The iPad 9 is a no-frills tablet that focuses on impressive performance without all the extras you’ll find on the iPad Pro and iPad Air. It might not be the best tablet for spec lovers, but is still very good. If you want an all-conquering iPad to replace your laptop, this probably isn’t the one, but if you want a reliable device for streaming Netflix, browsing the web and giving to the Kids then you can’t go wrong.
Despite our reservations over the ageing design, there’s a lot of reasons to recommend the entry-level 9th generation iPad. There are enough improvements here with True Tone support, faster processor, more storage and much improved front camera for clearer FaceTime calls and Centre Stage. Together, those reasons are more than enough to compel someone to upgrade from a pre-2019 iPad, though if they have a more recent model there isn’t the need to make the leap.
At $329 USD, the iPad is more than worth its base asking price. So long as you're able to avert your eyes from the more expensive iPad models Apple also sells, you'll have a mobile computing experience that far outweighs its cost in dollars. You needn't even add an Apple Pencil or Smart Keyboard to make the device worth your while – but once you use either of the two, you'll never go back.
If you want an inexpensive tablet, the iPad 2021 is the easiest way to get up to plunge into the Apple ecosystem. It’s fast, and while its design isn’t the freshest around, it’ll undoubtedly appeal to those not looking to learn a variety of gestures. We find it hard not to recommend at this price point for more casual users, but would advise tech aficionados look to the iPad Air M1 if they’re looking for a longer-term tablet.
Even taking the low price into account, the 9th Gen iPad is the least impressive product Apple has released all year. It is, more so than any other fruit-branded gadget, in dire need of an update. The design, with its chunky bezels and Home button, feels recycled from a past era. Moreover, the iPad supports older Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cellular standards, it lacks compatibility with newer stylus and keyboard accessories, and a Lightning connection is still used in place of a favored USB-C port.
